We just got back from South America, and just wanted to thank everybody for coming out to the shows down there. We had an amazing time, and wish we could have stayed down there longer and played more shows.

Here's the transcript of one of the interviews Spencer did for the show in Santiago tomorrow. It's the whole thing, without editing. It was a short interview but he talks, obviously, about the show in Chile, but also a little about the split and the recording of the new album, how's working with just Brendon and stuff like that.

About the show in Santiago:

Yeah you know the songs we're going to play are going to be pretty similar. And we're just really excited to be playing for people that have never seen our band before. It's always exciting to able to do that, and since this is our first trip going to South America, we're really looking forward to it. I think the show will be obviously different because there won't be the same guys on stage. But For me and Brendon, it stills feels good and natural to be playing with Ian and Dallon, who are the friends who are filling in, so yeah we're excited and looking forward to it.

Will they play any new songs?

We do have one song that was just released here on a soundtrack, it was after our second record came out and we'll definitely play that. And as far as new songs that we've been working on in the studio, I don't know. We don't have them totally ready to perform live, but I guess but we'll see, you never know. We can try to pull it off and just see how it goes.

Their expectations for the shows:

We have a few friends that have played in South America in different bands, and they all had great things to say. We've gone to quite a few places that maybe don't get as many concerts as bands do here in the states, and we always find that the crowd is very appreciative and respectful. They're always are great, really excited and it makes it fun for us. And us here in the states and in Europe sometimes get spoiled, because the band is from there, so they tour there a lot more. Honestly most of our favorite shows are in the places we don't go all the time. So we're excited about it, and especially being able to go around and see the city as well. I was doing some research on line looking at Santiago and it just looks like a beautiful city. So hopefully we'll have some time to walk around and explore a little bit.

About the new album:

We're about halfway done, and hopefully once we get back, in a few weeks, we're going right back to the studio and continue working. We're having a lot a fun recording and writing. There was a little bit of time where me and Brendon had to figure out how the band worked now. But it sort of went back to how it felt when we were writing the first album. And it was pretty, I don't know, just creative and a lot less disagreements that there were in the second album. It's been fun. I guess, songwise, it has elements of both of our albums. There was some stuff that we did, some theatrical things, we did on the first album that we wanted to bring back a little bit. So we're kind of mixing those, as well as mixing some of the new bands that we've been listening to in the last couple of years.


You know when we were writing the first album we had just gotten done with school and our goal was just to be able to tour in a van. There weren't really any expectations. And then after the album came out, we started touring on it, and we realized that the band was going to be our full time job. It was going to be our careers. Everybody started focusing on becoming better songwriters. Individually Ryan grew a little bit, as did everybody, but it got to a point where Ryan wanted to sing the lyrics that he was writing, and we understood that and we respected that. And once we were done touring for Pretty.Odd, we all sort of sat down, talked about it, and realized that at least for right now the best thing was for Ryan to do a project that he was sort of the main songwriter on. And for Brendon and I to do that same thing with Panic! So it's good. Looking back a few months later, everybody realizes that it was the right decision. Sometimes when there's disagreements in writing it can actually help the songs, but I think we just knew if we tried doing another record, it would be kind one too many cooks in the kitchen.


The thing that's kind of funny is the music we listen to is the same. And always has been. But there's a difference when you have to sit down and you have and say 'ok what do we want our songs to sound like'. And even though we love so many of the same artists, there were differences on where each individual person wanted to take their music. So yeah that sort of lead to it as well.

Release date?

In the first few months of next year. If we can get back and get done by the end of this year, then we should have it out in first or second quarter of next year.


The recording process:

Brendon actually played bass on the first album, and he did a little bit in the second record. Me and him sort of put the songs together with bass, drums and guitar, and then when we're recording, I'd say is half and half with things that we play, but the when we do any sort of orchestration, with strings or horns or things like that, we have our friend Rob Mathis, who produced Pretty.Odd, and he does those arrangements for us. Everything that is in the rock music, sort of guitar, bass, keyboard, that still all us, and then we sort of get help with the orchestrations.

It's been sort of an experiment in the last couple of months. Trying to figure out how it's going to go. And there was definitely some time in there when we were figuring out how we were going to write songs with just the two of us. And I think a big part of our band's always been vocal melodies and the singing aspect, so that's something that we always worked together at. That came pretty natural. I guess it's made us better musicians but I guess most of that has come from being in a band for your living, that's kind of your goal to become the best musician and best songwriter that you can.

"I can't wait to drink caipirinha". A favorite drink among ten out of ten foreigners passing through Brazil is on the list of mandatory things that Brendon Urie, lead singer of Panic! at the Disco, wants to do when he comes to visit for the first time in early November. In an interview with GLOBO, the lead singer and keyboardist of the band, playing at the Maquinaria Festival in Sao Paulo, did not even wait for the reporter to ask before he started talking about the excited comments he received on how the food and drinks are great here.

Full of good humor, Urie didn't seem like he went through a rough time just a few months ago. In July, the band of four members became a duet: from the formation that won over teenagers around the world, only the singer and drummer Spencer Smith are left.

The departure of guitarist Ryan Ross and bassist Jon Walker took place in the middle of writing the third album and on the eve of an American tour alongside Blink 182. At the time, Ross went on to say that the band members were barely speaking, and he and Walker were already working on new music with inspiration from greats like The Beatles, The Beach Boys and The Kinks, apart from the pop work with their former band mates. Still, Urie claims to not bear the slightest resentment towards them.

- We were lucky to see that we wanted to do different things. Ryan and Jon left because they wanted to explore new directions in music, but we're still great friends - he said, going for the old cliché.

While the two "deserters" decided to spend time on their new project, The Young Veins, Urie and Spencer did not let the ball drop. Alone, the two have continued to tour, promoted the release of the single "New Perspective" (from the "Jennifer's Body" soundtrack, which opened on Friday in Brazil) and went into studio to work on the new album.

- We have really changed our sound from one album to another and the next one will definitely be very different - said Urie. - Before we were four people writing and recording, now we are only two and it changes a lot. What I can tell you is that we are very happy with what is coming out - said the young man, who is currently listening to more adult music like rocker Peter Gabriel and the King of Soul Sam Cooke.

That dark period does not seem to have affected Urie, a talented multi-instrumentalist. He plays guitar, accordion, piano, cello, bass and drums. Even so, they are not left alone on stage. The guitarist Ian Crawford from The Cab, and bassist Dallon Weekes, from the Brobecks, will follow them here. However, the show in Sao Paulo remains a mystery. When asked about the fancy stage setups used on their shows, Urie didn't elaborate.

- We still don't know if we will bring our whole setup, but we might do something special for our fans, some surprises. We love to dress up, playing characters in our shows ... we also love the Brazilian fans. We have talked to them for years on the internet and finally we will be able to meet them!
