Brendon Urie Answers Fan Questions.

Panic! at the Disco will release their third album, Vices & Virtues, on March 29, and SPIN caught up with frontman Brandon Urie to chat about the LP — and ask him your questions, which we gathered via SPIN’s Twitter.

Here, Urie talks about the band’s creative process following the departure of founding members Ryan Ross and Jon Walker (who formed the Young Veins), Panic!’s upcoming tour, and the personal meaning of the LP’s title, Vices and Virtues.

What is your favorite song on Vices & Virtues?
Probably “Sarah Smiles,” which is about my girlfriend, actually, as sappy as that is. When I met her I wrote this song to try and impress her. I was infatuated with her. I played it for her and we’ve been dating ever since. That was a huge step for me, personally. I was able to build up my confidence to write a song and try to woo her. I’m a lucky guy.

What can fans expect from the new album?
There are definitely some new sounds. Though they’re familiar to our first and second records, these new songs couldn’t fit on those two records. We’ve always wanted to mess around with new ideas, arrangements, and instruments. There are synthesizers and keyboards, marimbas, and strings. We ended up buying some synths and messing around with them for months before working on the album. It was two kids in a candy store.

Are you still friends with Ryan Ross and Jon Walker?
I’m definitely glad to say that, yes, we are still friends. I talked to Ryan a couple days ago. We live close to each other and we’ve hung out a few times — gone to dinner, grabbed some drinks. We told each other we’d get together again soon. Friendship was really important to us when we split. It split was just about the music. It was mutual. We are super psyched for them and they’re stoked for us.

Will you work with Ryan and Jon again?
I don’t see why not. We haven’t talked about anything specifically, but if we take a break and meet up later that would be cool.

What do you do for fun when you’re not playing music?
When we first moved to California from Las Vegas we got into surfing. We figured we should do something to get in shape, but we hate working out. Surfing is definitely a work out. There were a couple close calls for us. It’s a really hard, really scary sport. We also recently got into Call of Duty: Black Ops. The zombie version is so fun.

What is your favorite album right now? Any recommendations?
We really love everything by Paul Simon. Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs is definitely one of our favorite new records. We listen to it non-stop.

Why did you name the new album Vices & Virtues?
I was looking at the lyrics, thinking, ‘What are the main themes here?’ They dealt with self-deprecation, pride, subversion, manipulation, but some good stuff too: self-expression, honesty. I was like, ‘Are these the seven deadly sins or something’? [laughs]. We did some research and ‘Vices and Virtues’ popped up. Aristotle has this Biblical list that’s tied in with themes of human behavior that we’ve been noticing in ourselves. This album is a study of our human behavior. It’s about our changes in self-esteem and the changes of growing up.

What was the hardest thing about writing the new album without two of Panic!’s members?
We had always written with the four of us, so it was a matter of coming out of that comfort zone. [Ryan and Jon] left and we were like, ‘What do we want to do?’ It was unfamiliar territory. I kept thinking, ‘What are people going to think about this song? Should I be worried about that?’ I didn’t think of myself as a lyricist and I was apprehensive about it. I sat down with Rob Mathes [who produced 2009’s Pretty. Odd and has worked with artists ranging from Jay-Z to Lou Reed to Carly Simon] and he said, ‘If you really want to write then it has to sound like you.’ I took his advice.

Did drummer Spencer Smith do more songwriting for this album?
Yeah. Between the two of us, it was about trying to figure out who was going to play which instruments. We usually write with one instrument and a melody. Then we throw what we call ‘ear candy’ all over the songs in the studio. We said, ‘We’re down to two people, so let’s push out as many ideas as we can.’ It was easy having an idea and explaining it to just one other person.

What was it like working with Rivers Cuomo?
Good! He was kind enough to invite us over to his house to write some songs for a day. None of them made the record, but we still had an awesome time. When we showed up he was incredibly nice, like, ‘Hey guys, come right in.’ He’s a really quiet talker; I’m very loud and expressive.

Will Panic! play theatrical live shows like those for A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out?
I really miss wearing costumes and makeup. I love throwing a big production. That’s really important for us. I’ve recently been reading about Tesla coils and I’m trying to figure out how I can get a Tesla coil that sits on the stage and shoots sparks without hurting anybody. We love to dress up for the special party.

Panic! At The Disco's 'The Ballad Of Mona Lisa' Video: A Steampunk Wake

Panic! mourn the past, moves on with the present in their comeback video.

The first thing you notice is the top hat. Covered in cobwebs, it's the same one from Panic! at the Disco's breakout "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" clip, which won Video of the Year at the 2006 VMAs, and has since been lost to the sands of time, forgotten by all but the most ardent of the band's supporters (the clip was the one with the mimes at the wedding, just in case you forgot). Which, of course, means that the top hat is meant to be symbolic ... because much like everything else from that bygone era, the Fever You Can't Sweat Out version of Panic! is dead and dusted.

Or, at least, that seems to be the deeper message in the video for "The Ballad of Mona Lisa," the first single from Panic!'s post-Pretty. Odd. post-bust-up comeback album, Vices & Virtues. Now pressing on as a two-piece (frontman Brendon Urie and drummer Spencer Smith), Panic! are moving headlong into the future ... though they've still got to bury the past.

And in "Mona Lisa," they do just that. There's definitely death in the air — the whole thing is basically a wake for a recently deceased Urie — but give credit to Panic! and longtime director Shane Drake (who's done several clips for the band, including the aforementioned "I Write Sins ...") for not settling for heavy-handed symbolism. Because "Mona Lisa" is a lot more: part gushing steampunk tribute, part gloriously over-the-top performance piece, and, of course, a little bit murder-mystery dinner theater thrown in for good measure.

In other words, not only is it the most evolved Panic! clip, it's also probably their best. Not to knock their earlier productions, but vids like "Sins" or "But It's Better If You Do" or even "Nine in the Afternoon" pale in comparison to "Mona Lisa" — they're simplistic and decidedly, uh, thrifty looking. This time out, Panic! go big, with a video that not only looks great — the costumes, the set, the performance — but actually unspools as a compelling story piece.

We wonder just who is hidden beneath the funeral linens (for a second, I honestly thought it was going to be departed guitarist Ryan Ross), and why Urie is stomping around with his hair wild and teeth yellowed (it's because he's a ghost trying to solve his own murder). And, most importantly, we ponder who killed him. When the big reveal finally happens, you genuinely feel like you've been swerved. And then we get to see one of those steampunk guns in action. So, you know, win-win.

Even the threat of a killer winter storm baring down on New York wouldn't deter Panic! At The Disco fans who've waited almost three years for new music from the Vegas band from showing up at Bowery Ballroom last Tuesday night. The resilience of the New York crowd isn't the only indicator that Panic has a hardcore fan base still in tact post-hiatus -- the $100 deluxe pre-sale bundle of their forthcoming album Vices & Virtues sold out online in just under 20 minutes. But to have hype and allegiance built on a solid track record (two hit albums, an VMA for Video of the Year) is one thing -- to win over a crowd in an ever-changing music landscape is another -- and Panic did just that Tuesday night.

Everything at the Bowery last night was a mix of the two versions of Panic, showcased on their two existing albums. The flowers of the tour for their sophomore album Pretty. Odd. were still present, but shaped into white funereal wreaths. The touch of theatrical from the Circus and Vaudeville tours of 2006 shone through in the troupe of Steampunk-fashioned extras who mingled with the crowd and watched the set in a large clump up in the VIP balcony, possibly because the Bowery stage is a little too small to hold about a dozen non-musical persons. Lead singer Brendon Urie took every opportunity to show off his vastly improving dance skills during the set, but has toned down the intra-band stage flirtations from their height several years ago. However, the cover of the Rocky Horror Picture Show's "Science Fiction/Double Feature" served as a completely acceptable substitute for stage-gay.

The set list was a mix of tracks from their platinum-selling debut A Fever You Can't Sweat Out and the follow-up Pretty. Odd., a best-of hits and crowd favorites that blended the sounds of both albums. Urie even declared that the acoustic track "Northern Downpour" -- an ode to the band's fans (and former guitarist Ryan Ross's longterm ex-girlfriend) -- brought tears to his eyes. The band played three new songs, including current single "The Ballad Of Mona Lisa," which is sat at number 43 on iTunes single chart a day after release. They also premiered "Nearly Witches," a song diehards would recognize from the 30-second clip included on the Fall Out Boy mixtape put out in 2008. It is clear the full piece was written at a different time than the rest of the new songs, and indeed the band resurrected it from writing sessions done between Fever and Pretty. Odd. It's definitely the most fantastical and fairy-tale, reminiscent of the musical story style sound they were reportedly going for on their second album before those sessions were scrapped in favor of the more Beatles-esque Pretty. Odd. The complicated lyricism of the song will fare better recorded than live, but it definitely catches your ear.

The best new song, though, was "Let's Kill Tonight" (see clip above), the most progressive sounding of the cuts making their debuts. It makes full use of Spencer Smith's fierce drumming and has the potential to get the crowd off their feet and bring back the almost-dangerous pit atmosphere of Panic's early days (you haven't lived til you've seen 13-year-olds pulled out of a mosh pit while circus performers are contorting on stage). That edge that was missing during the Pretty. Odd. peace and love era, and what drew many original fans to the bands unique sound, is alive and well in "Let's Kill Tonight." Still the track is a balance of the old and new, not as hectic and dance-pop as Fever but not as indie-rock as Pretty. Odd. aspired to be. If the rest of this album moves in the same direction, it has the potential to unite both sides of the Panic coin.
